A little seasonal know-how
Seasonal tips and tricks
General reminders for gardening in inland NSW. Let your soil, the weather and your garden guide what needs doing.
September to November
Spring
As the garden wakes up, ease into the growing season and keep an eye on late frosts.
- Check soil moisture regularly and adjust watering as the weather warms.
- Refresh mulch to help retain moisture, keeping it clear of stems and trunks.
- Feed actively growing plants as needed, following the product label. Avoid feeding dry or stressed plants.
December to February
Summer
Hot, dry days call for a little extra attention to moisture and heat stress.
- Check the soil before watering. When needed, water at soil level in the early morning and follow local water restrictions.
- Check mulch coverage to help keep soil cooler, leaving space around stems and trunks.
- Put off feeding and heavy pruning during extreme heat or when plants are heat-stressed.
March to May
Autumn
Use the milder days to tidy up and help your garden prepare for the cooler months.
- Reduce watering as temperatures fall, checking soil moisture rather than watering on a fixed schedule.
- Top up mulch before the cold arrives, keeping it clear of stems and trunks.
- Remove dead or damaged growth with clean tools. Check pruning timing before cutting back healthy growth.
June to August
Winter
With cold nights and frost possible, focus on protection and gentle maintenance.
- Watch the forecast and cover frost-sensitive plants with horticultural frost cloth before sunset. Remove it once the morning warms.
- Water only when the soil needs it, preferably in the morning. Avoid leaving soil waterlogged.
- Leave frost-damaged growth in place until the risk of further frost has passed before pruning it back.
